Breaking Medals

Product & Form Course

Materials: Bronze, Satin Ribbon

There is no first place without second and third, and no competition without community. Breaking Medals reimagines the archetype of the sports medal as a symbol of shared accomplishment.

Designed to be awarded as a single piece, the medal can be broken apart by athletes, each taking with them a fragment that is unique to that event and fits perfectly with their competitors’ pieces. This act shifts the focus from individual achievement to collective effort, turning the medal into a gesture of unity. Rather than reinforcing the traditional narrative of competition, the project highlights interconnectedness and pride that can only exist when rivals recognize one another’s role in their success.

Exhibited at “Sports - Friends, Pleasure and Gears” at Helsinki Design Week 2025.

As part of Helsinki Design Week the projects of this course were exhibited at TAHTO, the Centre for Finnish Sports Culture and Museum of the Olympic Stadium. For this I was in charge of organisinf and designing the space, including the life size cut outs combining illustration and photography, to contextualise every student’s project.

In collaboration with Elisabeth Bureau, we art directed a photo shoot for the projects and created a graphic identity for promotional posters.
